The Story of the Seafood Floating Restaurant
in Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter

In 1976, Aberdeen was home to three floating seafood restaurants. In 1982, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited, the owner and operator of Jumbo Seafood Restaurant, acquired Sea Palace, which was later rebuilt in the early 1990s and renamed into Jumbo Palace. In 1988, the company purchased Tai Pak Seafood Restaurant, effectively ending competition among the three establishments. By the mid-1990s, Jumbo Palace ceased operations due to internal business adjustments and was subsequently sold overseas. In 2003, both Jumbo Seafood Restaurant and Tai Pak Seafood Restaurant underwent renovations and were collectively rebranded as "Jumbo Kingdom".

The strong impression left on visitors comes not only from seeing the cultural marvel in person but also from people's familiarity with it through movies and popular culture. For instance, it was featured in the 1973 Bruce Lee film "Enter the Dragon", and in 1996 during the final showdown in Stephen Chow's film "The God of Cookery".
In the 1970s and 1980s, many world-famous guests attended, including Queen Elizabeth II, the President of Argentina, and numerous Hollywood stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and John Wayne.

Tai Pak Seafood Restaurant was the mother of floating restaurant. The first Tai Pak, a simple wooden landing craft, was established around 1947, shortly after World War II. In 1952, a larger second Tai Pak was built, measuring 105 feet in length. The third and most iconic Tai Pak, resembling the marvel we recognize today, was a two-story structure measuring 150 feet. It officially opened on January 17, 1962, while its predecessor was relocated to Castle Peak Bay and continued operations on the same day. For over 60 years, the third Tai Pak Seafood Restaurant has dazzled visitors and spectators, becoming a beloved landmark.

In August 2022, New Bond Limited assumed ownership of the vessels in the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter in Hong Kong.
