Tai Pak Floating Restaurant

Since its establishment in 1947, Tai Pak Floating Restaurant has been regarded as a "Pearl on the Sea" in Hong Kong’s tourism industry and has gained international acclaim as a renowned tourist attraction. As the only remaining floating seafood restaurant in Hong Kong, it is not only an important carrier of fishing culture but also a shared collective memory and a testament to the city’s prosperous era.

Over the years, Tai Pak Floating Restaurant has hosted numerous distinguished guests including international dignitaries, social elites, and business leaders. It is widely recognized as a prestigious and famous high-end floating seafood restaurant, earning the well-known nickname "Tai Pak Unique Hospitality," which has deeply ingrained itself in people’s hearts and enjoys an esteemed reputation.

History of Tai Pak Floating Restaurant

The origins of Hong Kong’s floating restaurants can be traced to the Banquet Boats along Guangzhou’s Pearl River, known as “Ge Tang” (歌堂) or “Ge Tang Barges” (歌堂躉).

 

1920s–1930s

In Aberdeen, Hong Kong, the local fishing community began operating Ge Tang boats, offering onboard dining for weddings, birthday banquets, and other celebrations among water people and fishermen. These vessels were simple, single‑deck wooden boats, fitted with a performance platform known as the “Ge Tang”, where singing and dancing entertained guests. In the official registry of the Hong Kong Marine Department, such boats were recorded as “Ceremonial Boats.”

 

1947

The first generation Tai Pak Floating Restaurant opened, operating on a wooden vessel approximately 100 feet long. Its design featured a triangular roof with flat bow and stern.

 

1952

The second generation Tai Pak began service, distinguished by an arched roof design. It replaced the first generation and marked a step toward more elaborate architecture.

 

January 17, 1962

The third generation Tai Pak was inaugurated. Its hull measured 55 meters in length and 17 meters in width, constructed in the style of a traditional Chinese palace — grand and majestic in appearance. At the same time, the second generation Tai Pak was relocated to Castle Peak Bay in Tuen Mun to continue operations.

The third generation Tai Pak Floating Restaurant, still in existence today, covers an area of more than 20,000 square feet. Its décor is steeped in traditional charm — luxurious, elegant, and magnificently regal, exuding the grandeur of an imperial palace. Benefiting from favorable timing, location, and community support, it became the longest operating floating restaurant. Over the years, it has welcomed numerous distinguished guests and countless visitors from around the world.

Since the 1970s, fresh seafood has been caught daily from the South China Sea and continuously delivered to Tai Pak’s own large aquaculture facilities — the “Fish Storage Barge”. This ensured a steady supply of live seafood for both local and international diners, earning the restaurant worldwide acclaim. A popular saying about Tai Pak has long circulated:

“To savor the freshest catch from the sea, one spares no expense from the purse.”


In addition, Tai Pak boasts a team of master chefs with extensive experience. With superb culinary skills, they prepare a dazzling variety of seafood dishes tailored to guests’ preferences, employing multiple cooking techniques to create more than a hundred delicacies. While dining in the splendidly decorated halls, guests can also enjoy breathtaking sea views, indulging in a refined and memorable dining experience.
